Toastmasters Speech Contests are events that show off the talents of the members who compete and members who organize and support the events. A warm thank you to all those who participated!
The Inhouse contest winners are:
For English
1. Jason Yang
2. Natasha Thompson
For Japanese
1. Helen Lewis
2. Shigeto Miyamoto
As for preparation, I didn’t rehearse – I wanted to speak from the heart. I spent time mind-mapping – thinking about the structure and outline of the speech and appropriate transitions to connect the ideas. I thought about the feeling I wanted to convey which also kept the nerves away. (Jason’s reflection on his experience at the district speech contest)

Toastmasters
I’m going to run a workshop on December 2nd and would like some input from you on what it should be on.
TM Yang suggested that I explain the flow of the meeting, e.g., how to perform various roles on the day as well as how to prepare.
I was also thinking of explaining the educational programs, e.g., what happens after you get your ‘Competent Communicator’ and the leadership program.
If you have any ideas on what to do a workshop on, please let me know!
Helen

Congratulations first time TMOEs Sroka and Kaneda!

TM Sroka and TM Kaneda took to the lectern as Toastmaster of the Evening in the English and Japanese sessions yesterday. It was great to see them in a different role and I was very pleased with how well they prepared. Both said they were a little nervous about being ‘emcee’ but they created a warm and professional atmosphere. It was a shame that the staff at the new venue have a very strict policy on being out at 9 pm, but we managed to round things off smoothly. I’ll be announcing the awards as soon as I hear from TM Miyata who served as Vote Counter!
Some other highlights were seeing TM Kaneko complete his tenth project (‘Ich bin ein Berliner!’) from the Competent Communicator manual and TM Kubota’s excellent evaluation.
Well done all!
