Table Topics Contest! ・テーブルトピックスコンテスト

The winner of our English contest is Keisuke Watanabe. Other participants were Mochida Teruyasu and Yoshihiro Inokuchi. They spoke on the topic “What do you think of TASPO?” Mr. Watanabe included an anecdote about how he went to a machine that had facial recognition to determine age. He was refused, because the machine judged his face as too young. This amusing story helped him win the contest.

Table Topics Competition, September 17th

I found a very helpful article in the Toastmaster Magazine’s April 2008 edition: Mastering Table Topics, How to go on when you really want a time-out. If you don’t still have it, the main points are as follows:

1. Make the topic your own – you can do this by repeating the question to give yourself some thinking time, then twist it to an area you are comfortable talking on.

2. When you have finished talking on your topic, return to the question that was originally posed. This gives your closing more impact.

3. Although you cannot prepare for a specific question, you can think about how the theme or Word of the Evening, in your answer. For example, last week’s theme was “touching” – a broad theme - everyone has some ideas and associations that naturally spring from this. Think of something, anything – a story, an idea, a question, a joke – before you are asked a question in Table Topics. When your brain is generating ideas before you are called on, you are not caught “off guard”, and you are more likely to connect what you know to the question. When you feel ready, you are more likely to shine!

If anyone else has any other interesting ideas or strategies they would like to share on speaking in Table Topics, feel free to share them!
