This a post from Jason about 3 years back.I really like the expression and the Obamaseque tone!!

Cheers to Jason!!Deserves a repost!

1) Congratulate yourself on an enlightening meeting last night. We had many guests (thanks to Helen’s follow-up with inquiries from the website). They complimented us, and the comments reflect the energy you have been putting into the club: A Bobby Wang said that he felt a lot of positive energy at the meeting. A Mr. Watanabe complimented us on how well-structured the meeting was. A Chad, from a club in the states, said that he got some new ideas for how to run meetings at his club.

2) Thank you for allowing me to president for a year. I have changed a lot this year, from being accustomed to jumping from one hobby to another and working solo, to learning the pleasure of sticking to a pursuit, seeing a longer-term picture, and being more of a team player. You have certainly helped me to grow.

What keeps me going to meetings is the knowledge that there will always be something new to learn from somebody – yesterday Natasha talked about discovering herself through conversations with friends; Helen reflected on what being a good teacher is, in a humorous way; Xiao Huijie spoke of remembering her mother’s providing for her.

What’s exciting about putting effort into toastmasters is the immediacy of feedback – hearing the evaluations, feeling the satisfaction of playing a meeting role well, and sensing the atmosphere of a meeting. Think about what excites you about toastmasters, notice what works and do more of it.

Let’s continue to make things better and better.

-Jason

This will help you get people to think of the value of Toastmasters in their own terms, to bring guests and new members to the club, as well as get you to think harder about the value that you want to get out of Toastmasters.

Jeffrey Gitomer, in his Little Red Book of Selling, speaks of the importance of asking value-based questions.

For example: Do you want to do polish you public speaking skills in English/Japanese?
may be a good question for someone who has already reflected on the value of public speaking skills in English/Japanese, but a mediocre question for someone who has never thought about the implications of these skills.

Such a person would be better served by value-based questions. Ones that get him to think in terms of his own interests, and answer in terms of membership to Toastmasters.

Here are some examples:

How much more successful could you be at your job if you could make your presentations more convincing and easier to understand?

If you had better English/Japanese public speaking skills, how would you use them to improve your business?

How much is one new business friend or relationship worth?

How quickly could you improve your speaking skills if you could get instant feedback on: speech content, speech structure, your body language, or other aspects of your presentation?

How much time did you spend last month developing your speaking skills?

How much time do you wish you had spent last month developing your speaking skills?

If you were able to achieve your goal of improving your language skills, would investing 10 hours a month be worth it?

Can you see any reason not to come visit?

Is there anything more you need to know?
