Toastmaster Azuma has sent me some pictures from the Division C speech contest that we had last April. Note how the contestants are dressed - the men generally have their coats buttoned so that their ties don’t stick out of their blazers as they move around and gesture on stage. The women generally imitate the men with subdued suit dresses, except the young lady with the pink. She spoke about traveling in India and gave thought to creating the impresssion she was actually travelling. I thought it went well with her speech.

2) Thank you for allowing me to president for a year. I have changed a lot this year, from being accustomed to jumping from one hobby to another and working solo, to learning the pleasure of sticking to a pursuit, seeing a longer-term picture, and being more of a team player. You have certainly helped me to grow.

What keeps me going to meetings is the knowledge that there will always be something new to learn from somebody - yesterday Natasha talked about discovering herself through conversations with friends; Helen reflected on what being a good teacher is, in a humorous way; Xiao Huijie spoke of remembering her mother’s providing for her.

What’s exciting about putting effort into toastmasters is the immediacy of feedback - hearing the evaluations, feeling the satisfaction of playing a meeting role well, and sensing the atmosphere of a meeting. Think about what excites you about toastmasters, notice what works and do more of it.

Let’s continue to make things better and better.

The General Evaluator evaluates the overall flow of the meeting, and the appropriateness of the evaluations.Explain your role when you are called upon to give your evaluation. Some things to look at might be:

• whether members mixed languages (spoke English during the Japanese session, or vice-versa)
• whether the evaluations were appropriate. Did people comment on the behavior and not the person? As a rule, comment on the spoken evaluation and avoid adding additional comments about the speech
• whether members were prepared for their roles

The vote counter collects votes for awards, and comments for the speakers. At the beginning of the meeting, clearly request that the members vote and give comments. The toastmaster of the evening will decide who is eligible to receive an award.

Example script “I will be vote counter of the evening, for awards to be presented at the end. On these voting and comment sheets <hold up a sheet to show the audience>.

Please vote for

• A best overall speaker
• A best overall evaluator
• A best table topics speaker for each of the Japanese and English sessions<though be aware: sometimes we have one or no table topics sessions>

Place your votes in the box which will be passed around. I will also collect and distribute the comment sheets for the speakers and evaluators. Please offer some constructive comments to help them improve.”

The job of the timekeeper is to keep track of the time for speeches, evaluations, and table topics, and to ensure that the meeting begins and ends on time. From time to time, it may be necessary to remind the person on the floor of time restrictions.

Before the meeting begins, confirm with each speaker the amount of time his speech is to run.

Example Script: “I will be timekeeper for the meeting. I will indicate the amount of time you have by raising three colored flags:

* Green means you have spoken for the minimum time
* Yellow means your running out of time
* Red means time is up, and you must stop in 30 seconds”

Flags are raised as below.

Table Topics　　green at 1′　　yellow at 1′30”　　red at 2′
5-7 min speech　green at 5′　　yellow at 6′　　　　red at 7′
Evaluation　　　green at 2′　　yellow at 2′30”　　red at 3′

raise yellow between the start and end times of a speech. For a 15-20′ speech:
green at 15′　yellow at 17′30″　　red at 20′
